Whether you like a stand-up comedian or not is obviously a matter of personal taste. Some stand-ups are Marmite-like in their “love them or hate them” nature, for example Frankie Boyle, while there are others that everyone seems to like, for example Peter Kay. It could be argued that stand-up comedians are at their best when they are young (a bit like rock bands). There's also the point that when comedians become successful they tend to undertake other projects such as TV drama and film work. One of our favourite comedians is Steve Coogan, whose comedic genius was more than evident in his early stand-up career. Steve's early stand-up work included such characters as Paul 'I hate students' Calf, his sister Pauline Calf, and Duncan Thickett. DVDs of these early performances are available via Amazon, and will show you a true comedy genius at work.

It is of course easy to find many funny video clips online, but there's nothing like having your favourite comedians on DVD, so you can watch them at any time.

Other early work that Steve Coogan has done includes Radio 4’s “On the Hour” (1991-1992) and its TV adaptation “The Day Today” on BBC2. Steve has of course continued with his comedy series for television, and one of his most successful characters has been Alan Partridge, with his famous catchphrase "Aha!". However, talented comedians like Steve Coogan are never happy to stand still, and he is always coming up with new characters, such as the middle-aged pest-controller with anger management issues, Tommy Saxondale.
